The wooden insert is slid into the frame so the holes match up, and a ribbon is threaded through the holes. A spectator holds both end of the ribbon and you pull the wooden insert free from the frame. And, the ribbon remains threaded in the frame.

Supplied complete with frame, escape panel and a length of ribbon with a needle threaded on one end.
